Manager vs. Leader: Understanding the Key Differences for Effective Leadership
Have you ever wondered about the difference between a manager and a leader? As a leadership consultant, I encounter all types of leaders every day, and I’ve noticed a clear difference between managing and coaching.
Just today, I led two roleplays that really highlighted this difference. The first leader, Lisa, was all about the present moment. She kicked off the meeting by asking, “What are your priorities?” Throughout our session, she kept me on track, making sure we met important deadlines and addressed immediate issues.
The second leader, Mark, took a different approach. He was focused on the future. Instead of asking about my current tasks, he asked, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” He really encouraged me to think about long-term goals and how to achieve them.
Both approaches were powerful in their own way. Lisa helped me manage the immediate priorities, breaking them down to help me drive better results. Later, Mark helped me reflect on what I’d learned and how to apply those lessons to my future career.
This experience taught me that while management is necessary for immediate success, coaching is vital for long-term growth. To truly thrive as a leader, you need to embody both: the day-to-day guidance of a manager and the future-focused vision of a coach.
